Your Visit

Appointment booking

In Australia, you need a valid GP or specialist referral to make an appointment with Professor Steadman and to claim a Medicare benefit. If you are from overseas, no referral is required but you will need insurance or self funding to get treatment in Australia.

Appointment cancellation

If you have an appointment and do not attend you could be charged because clinical time has been allocated to your appointment. We endeavour to remind you of your appointment.

We use both phone and video Telehealth when we can, although it is not always applicable.

Preparation for your consultation

  • Ensure you have your referral letter. Note that the GP can send your referral letter directly to us. Once the referral has been received you will receive a call from our practice team to arrange an appointment, so please ensure your contact details are correct.
  • Ensure you have both new and old x-rays relating to your problem.
  • Check your private insurance eligibility for private in-hospital care and ask our staff for an item number to check your private health insurance policy coverage.
  • Organize your schedule so you have plenty of time to meet and discuss your condition.
  • Know where to park at the Mater to stay on time.

What to bring to your consultation

  • Medicare and Private Health Insurance documentation (Medicare Card, Insurance Card etc).
  • A valid Referral letter from your GP or referring specialist (or ensure that a referral has been sent to us directly).
  • Any past information about your condition.
  • All x-rays, scans, pathology, or test results relating to your problem.
