Independent medical examination is the process where a non-treating medical practitioner gives a second opinion about and patient and the injury condition usually requested and referred by a third legal party. These assessments include all facets and stages of the injury case that might range from causation, diagnosis, treatment, return to work and permanent impairment.

As the founder of Medilaw in May 2000, Professor Steadman has personally performed over 15,000 independent medical examinations but overseen more than 250,000 examinations through medilaw.com.au. With a Master of Impairment Assessment (MCIME) through the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners and as an international ambasador – abime.org, he knows how to complete impairment assessments in AMA 4, 5 and 6. He often gives expert evidence in court when required, with a special interest in Comcare and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

Nowadays Medilaw is part of the Medhealth group in Australia which is a multi-faceted organisation providing employment and disability employment services, rehabilitation services, NDIS services and independent medical examinations for all parts of the legal and government communities that require a second opinion. At Medhealth, Professor Steadman is the Chief Medical Officer of Medhealth in Australia and responsible for ongoing education and training of over 1,800 doctors and Allied health practitioners. MedHealth is part of the international organisation Examworks that perform over 1 million exmainations per year internationally.
